Artist’s Statement

After spending more than twenty in commercial design, illustration and calligraphy, I found when returning to fine art that the simple directness and immediacy of pen and brush to paper as hard to resist as it was when I first started making art. The love of sinuous line and vivid color always play a role in my work regardless of subject matter. Making art is a continual process of experimentation, change, and self-discovery. Ultimately we are always in pursuit of the purest expression of our true selves. As Picasso has said, “It takes a very long time to become young”.

While I enjoy landscapes, my subject matter also includes figurative and semi-abstract work done with watercolor, ink, colored pencil and acrylics. Exploring the interplay of patterns and color relationships leads in unexpected and exciting new directions. One painting technique I am exploring begins with a black monoprint base with overlays of watercolor and acrylics. This gives the work a dramatic graphic quality. Other series ofpaintings celebrate the beautiful luminescence of the medium.

Art Education

Kathy earned a Bachelor of Art Degree at San Jose State University, and continued on there to earn a Master of Art Degree, with a concentration in Painting and Drawing (John DeVincenzi, Al Barela, R. Sadler). Later, she added a California Community College Teaching Credential. Additional classes in illustration, printmaking, and painting with instructors such as Skip Lawrence, Dale Latinen and Mike Bailey have kept my artwork energized.
